Juan de Flandes, a Flemish painter, was active in Spain from 1496 onwards. He entered the service of Queen Isabella, who appointed him court painter in 1498.

A cleft lip is a congenital abnormality in which the upper lip has a gap or split.
The cleft may occur as a single opening in the middle of the lip or as an opening on both sides. The condition is often associated with a cleft palate, an opening in the roof of the mouth.
A cleft lip is usually corrected with plastic surgery shortly after birth.

♦ Definition: Cleft palate
A cleft palate is a congenital malformation caused by incomplete fusion of the two halves of the palate. It may involve the soft palate and uvula, the hard palate, or both.
The condition may occur with or without a cleft lip or a cleft in the alveolar ridge.

♦ Bespreking
Een hazenlip betekent niet altijd een open lip. Meestal zijn ook de kaak en het gehemelte gespleten.
Behalve het feit dat de patiënten een misvormd uiterlijk vertonen, hebben zij ook grote problemen bij het eten en het spreken. Er treden ook talloze ontstekingen van het middenoor op.
In feite zijn de problemen zo groot, dat in een aantal landen vele van deze patiëntjes overlijde.
Een hazenlip is gemakkelijk te corrigeren met een of twee operaties, die velen in de arme landen zich niet kunnen veroorloven.

De Cleft surgery organisation is een Belgisch-Nederlandse organisatie, die medische heelkundige hulp verleent in ontwikkelingslanden.
